For lawyers and law firms

AI you can explain to your client.

Draft, summarise, compare and translate in a chat whose AI inference runs on infrastructure inside the European Union. Client data is never used for training, and every party in the chain is named on a public list.

Inference

European Union

Every prompt and answer is processed on infrastructure inside the EU, by a European company.

Training

Never

Client data in your prompts is not used to train or improve any model.

Contract

DPA

Firms get a data processing agreement under article 28 GDPR. Read the summary.

Professional secrecy

What EU inference does and does not solve.

Your duty of confidentiality covers every tool a client file passes through. So here is the honest split.

The layer that reads your text, the model, runs inside the European Union at a European company. That keeps the content of your prompts away from US and Chinese providers. It does not put the whole service beyond foreign law: three parties in our chain have a US parent, and region is not jurisdiction. The CLOUD Act explainer sets out why that matters.

  • True: All AI inference runs on infrastructure inside the European Union.
  • True: Prompts and answers never go to the United States or China.
  • True: Client data is not used to train models.
  • True: The inference layer sees the text, not who you are or what you pay. Who sees what.
  • Not true: “No data leaves the EU.” Hosting, database and payments run through companies with a US parent. They are named on the subprocessor list.
  • Not true: “CLOUD Act free.” A US parent falls under the CLOUD Act, so we do not claim it.
Use cases

The work that eats your hours.

The chat does the writing and reading around a case. The legal judgment stays with you.

Draft letters and memos

Give it the facts and the tone, and get a first draft of a client letter, a memo or a notice of default to edit.

Summarise case files

Paste a long file and get the chronology, the parties and the open questions. The Long context tier reads a whole case file in one prompt.

Compare contracts

Put two versions side by side and see which clauses changed, what was added and what went missing.

Translate correspondence

Translate letters and emails between EU languages, and have it flag the terms that need a lawyer's eye.

Explain it to the client

Turn a technical legal position into plain language your client can follow, in their own language.

Prepare a meeting

List the questions to ask, the documents to request and the points the other side is likely to raise.

Where to be careful

A language model is not a source.

Models write with conviction and are sometimes wrong. That is true of every model, ours included.

  • Check every citation. Models can invent case law, article numbers and quotes that look real. Find each one in the official source before it goes anywhere.
  • Check that the law is current and from the right country. A model can mix up jurisdictions or rely on a rule that has since changed.
  • Share only what the task needs. Leave out names and identifying details when the question works without them.
  • Follow your bar's rules. Your bar association or law society may have guidance on AI tools and client consent. It comes before anything on this page.
  • You stay responsible. The output is a draft for a lawyer to review, never advice to send unread.

Not legal advice

Union AI is a general-purpose AI assistant, not a legal research database. It does not give legal advice.

Questions from firms

What lawyers ask us.

Short answers. The documents above have the long ones.

Can lawyers use ChatGPT or other AI with client data?

It depends on your bar's rules, your engagement letters and the tool. Most guidance asks for a processing agreement, a commitment not to train on your data and a clear view of who can access it. Read your own bar's guidance first: it comes before any vendor's page, this one included.

Does using AI breach professional secrecy or legal privilege?

Not in itself. The risk sits in sharing client information with a party that can read it or can be forced to hand it over. That is why it matters who runs the model and under which law, and why we publish every party in our chain on the subprocessor list.

Is Union AI trained on my clients' data?

No. The content of prompts and answers is never used to train or improve models. It is not sold or shared with third parties for their own purposes either.

Does the US CLOUD Act apply to Union AI?

The company that runs the model, Scaleway, is European, not American. Our hosting, database and payment providers do have a US parent, and the CLOUD Act can reach those, so we do not claim to be CLOUD Act free. The subprocessor list names all three.

Can AI invent case law or citations?

Yes. Language models can produce case names, article numbers and quotes that look real and do not exist. Treat every citation as unverified until you have found it in the official source.

Does my firm get a data processing agreement?

Yes. Business customers get a data processing agreement under article 28 of the GDPR. The summary is on our DPA page; email hello@europeanailab.eu for the version to sign.

What does Union AI cost for a law firm?

The chat is €13 a month excluding VAT, and every colleague you add is €10 a month on the same invoice. You can cancel at any time from your account.
