European AI, open weights and what a token costs

Plain writing about running AI inside the European Union: where your prompts are processed, what open-weight models can and cannot do, and what per-token pricing works out at. Honest about the limits, including ours. The product itself is on the pricing page and in the API documentation.

Frequently asked questions

The short answers. Each one is worked through properly in one of the posts above, or on subprocessors and AI transparency.

What is an open-weight model?

An open-weight model is one whose trained parameters are published, usually under a licence such as Apache 2.0 or MIT, so anyone can download it and run it on their own infrastructure. It is not the same as open source: most open-weight releases do not publish the training data or the training code.

Which AI models can run inside the European Union?

Any open-weight model, because weights are a file and the hardware decides the geography. That is why an American or Chinese open-weight model can be served entirely from European infrastructure, and why the origin of the weights and the location of the processing are two separate questions.

When does self-hosting an LLM become cheaper than an API?

When your load is high and steady enough to keep a GPU busy. A per-token bill scales down to nothing when traffic is quiet, while a rented GPU costs the same overnight, so the comparison is a month of real token spend against the monthly price of the smallest instance that can serve your model, plus the person who maintains it. Most teams reach that crossover later than they expect.

Does the EU AI Act apply to my company?

Probably, but usually in its lightest form. Most companies are deployers rather than providers, and the duty that reaches them first is transparency: telling people when they are interacting with an AI system, which has applied since 2 August 2026. Heavier obligations attach to high-risk uses such as recruitment, and they phase in later.
